Thomas Smith was born in The Hague in Holland. After a short time he moved with his family to Ecuador for a few years and then onto California and Texas. At the age of nine Tom moved to Bangkok, Thailand, for seven years, which is where his interest in Chemistry started. At the age of 16 he moved to the UK for his A-levels and university education.

Tom undertook his undergraduate degree at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, with a year working with the Exploratory Chemistry department of GSK in Stevenage. His final year project at St. Andrews was under the supervision of Professor Douglas Philp building a reciprocal replicating system, where hydrogen bonding between molecules lead to the assembly of reciprocal molecules in a system. With an interest to learn more chemistry and work more in a lab Tom moved to Manchester to start a PhD under the supervision of Mike Turner and David Procter working with ACAL energy on the synthesis and evaluation of novel hydrogen fuel cell cathodes.

Thomas also has interests in music, film, art, juggling and cooking and has plans to learn some glassblowing sometime in the near future.
