Chin Yang Yu

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Taipei, Taiwan and received my masters degree in chemistry from Fu-Jen Catholic University in Taipei in 1999. I then enlisted in air force at Taipei Telecommunication Battalion for two years as a corporal. In 2001, I joined polymer section of China Textile Institute for the development of new functional polymers, such as water-borne polyurethane and polyaniline systems for textile coating fabrication. In order to satisfying my curiosity in chemistry, I decided to start my PhD with Mike L. Turner at University of Sheffield in 2003 before moved to the University of Manchester in May in 2004.

My research scope focus on synthesis, characterization and application of linear and cyclic conjugated polymers. We particularly used ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to obtain conjugated polymers. These polymers may have a narrower polydisperity than similar polymers that have been synthesized by other routes. We also plan to synthesize a specific organometallic catalyst to polymerize a narrow polydispersity of cyclic conjugated polymer. And then we can easily control the molecular weight, configuration, and conformation of the cyclic conjugated polymer. Eventually, we can find out the key factor of polymerization between acyclic and cyclic conjugated polymer system in order to apply in industries.
